The floods

I wasn’t coming back to blogging yet but…

Today, as I stay tuned to the flood news from Queensland and NSW I have to wonder at the harshness of this land I love. Sometimes it is too much rain, sometimes it is too much wind, sometimes it is fire. Always at this time of year. In Melbourne it is gloomy, overcast. A grim day and grim feelings. This disaster reminds me of that terrible time – Black Saturday. I am sure many other Victorians are feeling the same. 75% of Queensland has been declared a disaster zone. There have been deaths. Tragedies…my condolences to all.

These are sad days.

  1. Almost 2 years ago when BLack Saturday fires and Qld floods happened.
    And now again.
    So much destruction.

    • Hi Jayne,

Yes, the size of this disaster is hard to comprehend. It really hasn’t been that long since the terrible fires/floods, has it? Feels like a lifetime ago already. It just reminds me of the fragility of us all,yet again.

  2. What a terrible major flood. I hope that you are not near the areas of the flooding. May the folks in the flooding areas find help amongst their friends, and relatives — and maybe the govt too. — barbara

    • Hi Barbara,
Thanks but I am thankfully a long way from the floods in Queensland and NSW. To give you an example of how far away, I am in Melbourne, which is over a 1000 miles from Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland currently experiencing massive flooding. I also hope there will be enough help for everybody. Certainly it looks like the locals are helping each other, and the emergency services are doing an incredible job. The size of this disaster is mind boggling.

  3. Shortly before Christmas, residents along a river west of us had to scramble to their rooftops. Workers at a local fish farm rescued most of them, pets and all. I can understand a little, then, what’s happening in your country — the personal tragedies, the community rallying together — but the scale of the Queensland flooding makes our recent crisis look like a schoolyard skirmish compared with a war. Ungraspable.

    • Hi lavenderbay,

I find it hard to imagine the extent of it myself. We also have some flooding happening in rural Victoria, but I believe the weather is clearing now, so hopefully we won’t have anymore. So strange, we have come out of the long drought in a rather extreme way. I am sorry to hear about the people who experienced flooding near you. It is wonderful though, that others were able to save them. The community response here has also been brilliant, and it will need to continue for years.

  4. this country fights humans all the time.
    she’s a rough sort.

    • Sorry for the late reply but yep, you are right about that M. And you said that before the cyclone, even more flooding and the bushfires. She’s rough as guts.
