Signs

This post was inspired by Andrew, who is actively collecting the old signs of Melbourne for a project he has on the boil.

The last signs of Whelan The Wrecker.
The public used to call the early workers of this company ‘ Whelan’s Birds’ because of the heights they would scale, balancing on the walls of their [...]

Always rubber necking…

I would like to thank Alyson from Laugh In The Sun for giving me a Kind Blogger Award this week. I am chuffed by that. I have met so many kind bloggers, so I pass this award to all who have commented here (if you don’t have it already). You are a [...]

Smiling at the fruit trees

Smiling again. Ah, some things never change. Just thought I’d visit an old fruit tree I used to know in the back blocks of Abbotsford in inner Melbourne. I paused next to the tin fence and looked up into the branches. Nice to see you old friend, still going after all these years. This [...]

Lions and Firecrackers in Richmond

Happy New Year!
I had a whole other post planned but I ran into a Chinese lion dance in Victoria St Richmond in inner Melbourne today and I just had to post the photos as it is the first day of the Chinese New Year. The year of the Rat.
The lion is a guardian animal in Chinese tradition. The [...]

Melbourne the great

Melbourne’s city beach in St Kilda where the kite boarders play.
The Spirit of Tasmania sits in the background waiting to cross Bass strait

Thinking about Melbourne and now that I read blogs, walking around the inner city reminds me of Highriser. I recommend and recommend highly his wonderful blog if you want to get to know the place. It is insightful, [...]

Spelling it out

The packaging says it all really.
I spotted this box in a shop window in country Victoria.  Oh Aussie, Australia made in China. How deep will they have to dredge our lovely Port Phillip Bay to bring in more stuff and nonsense?
I don’t know where the famous Aussie brand sitting beside it is made. Hopefully still in Australia [...]

Flinders St nighty night

The grand old lady of Flinders St was slumbering peacefully late one Monday night when I was going home. She is a heritage listed train station sitting on the banks of the Yarra River in her current finery since building finished in 1910. Can you believe there were plans to demolish this grand building [...]

Eccentric country

I don’t know about this…I really don’t but someone has gone to a bit of trouble to catch (sorry) the attention of passersby on a busy road to the Bacchus Marsh town centre. This is a truly eccentric act. Like it or loathe it someone has carefully avoided the temptation to give us all [...]

Is it a sign?

Have the farmer’s markets won? Has the little cafe down the road reversed the pressure? No, this outlet is still operating. It is just a little strange to see this particular signage looking all naked and deconstructed. I wonder what happened?

I think Mr Brock would be pleased with this memorial

We parked behind this car in Yarra Glen.
I am neither a fan or a detractor of Mr Brock. I don’t read the gossip. I didn’t follow his career. I do, however, like a fitting tribute. Something apt.
