Hi LB / Waterjay!

Great new name, by the way. Lol, they really are amazing looking birds. It's funny, I have dropped into your blog a few times and thought it was weird you weren't posting. It seemed more like my blogging behaviour than yours, but I guessed you might be on an adventure or break. It's great to know you have a new locale. I will pop over and catch up over the weekend.

Right now I will be going to bed early with my annual cold.

Look at the bill on that guy! Around here we have Belted Kingfishers, but if the Kookaburra came here he'd have to be the Emperorfisher.
(This is yer old pal Lavenderbay, btw; my former blog doesn't fit me anymore, so I've reinvented myself. )

Thanks Jayne :). He made my day after missing another photo, on the same trip, of a Royal Children's Hospital collector leaning into the car window with a cookatoo attached to his shoulder. Apparently, he and his cockie have been collecting together for 17 years. It was a day of big birds lol.

Hi Dennis,

Thanks! We sang that song at school too lol. We always sang "old gum tree" but other than that - exactly the same.
I think because of that song, kookaburras are known all around the world. The sound of their laugh is just brilliant.
Always makes me smile.

Cool picture! We used to sing a song about the kookaburra in elementary school chorus. If I remember correctly, it went like this:

"Kookaburra sits in the old oak tree
Very merry king of the bush is he
Laugh, kookaburra, laugh, kookaburra,
Gay your life must be."

Thanks goodbear. He is gorgeous isn't he! I was thrilled to finally get the chance to take a photo of one of these fellows. They had been quite elusive up until then.

Thanks Andrew. The blue was a surprise to me. Just did a quick search and found an amazing variety - a spangled Kookaburra which hangs around in New Guinea and Aru Islands. They are spectacular.
